BASIC TUTORIAL



    Set Units

    Click on the Set Units button.

    Under Display Units select the desired map units (Feet, Miles, Meters, Kilometers)

    Click the Set Units button to apply the selected units to the map display.

 

 

    Measure:

 

   Make the "Parcels"  Layer Active by clicking on the circle next to it.

    Set the units to "Feet".

   

   

    Click on Find Tool and type in the String box: DUCHESNE COUNTY

    All the parcels owned by Duchesne County will be displayed in the table bellow the map.

    Click on Rec 1.

    The map zooms to the selected parcel.
    The selected parcel is shown in Orange.
    The Table below shows the Attributes of the selected parcel.
    The Scale Bar shows the distance in Feet.

   
    We are going to measure the sides of this parcel.
    Click on the Measure Tool.

    The Measure Tool opens on the Top Left of the Map.
    The first column displays the Total Distance in Feet.
    The second column displays the Segment Distance in Feet.
    All the values in the Measure Tool are initialized to zero.
    Notice, the Active Tool (Measure) now has a red box around it.
    The Active Tool Mode (Measure) is displayed in the Mode Window below.

   

    We are going to digitize the boundary of this parcel.
    Start from one corner and end on the same corner.
    Click on the Top Left corner A.
    Wait a few seconds till a Red Dot is displayed.
    Then move the cursor down to Corner B. Do not click yet!
    Notice, how the Distance Column in the Measure Tool updates as you move your cursor.
    The distance AB reads 1325.52 feet.

   


     Place your cursor exactly over Corner B and Click once.
    Move your cursor to Corner C. Do not click yet!
    The first column gives the distance BC. It reads 991.46 feet.

 

    Place your cursor exactly over Corner C and Click once.
    A red dotted line AC is drawn connected your first and last points.
    The first column displays the Total Distance of the segments (AB + BC).

 

   

 

 

    Move your cursor to Corner D. Do not click yet!
    Notice how the first column updates as you move your cursor.
    Segment Distance CD = 1325.56 feet.

   

 

     Click on Corner D.
    A red dotted line is drawn connecting C and D.
    The second column gives the Total Distance of Segments (AB + BC + CD).

 

   

    Complete digitizing your polygon.
    Move you cursor exactly over Corner A and Click once.
    The second column gives the Perimeter of the polygon (AB + BC + CD + DA).

   

 

    Your digitized length and area measurements are approximate.
    Obtain Legal Description of parcels for exact dimensions.
    Press the Clear Selection Tool.
    This resets the Measure Tool.
    The Attribute Table is cleared.

 

    Buffer:
    In this exercise we will buffer a selected features.
    Make sure the Parcels Layer is Active.

    Click QUERY Tool and search for the parcel with serial number 112.

   

    The Search Result Table shows the parcel with serial number 112

    Click on Rec 1.

    The map zooms to display the selected parcel, in Orange.
    The Attributes of the selected parcel are shown below the map.

 

    Check the Scale and make sure the Units are MILES.

    If the scale shows FEET, click SET UNITS and change to MILES

   

   

    Click on the Buffer Tool.
    Notice that the Tool Mode changes to Buffer.

    In "Highlight feature from" click on Roads Layer.

    Enter "1" in distance field.

    Check the box next to "Display Attributes"
    Press the [Draw Buffer] button.

 

   
    A gray one mile buffer zone is drawn around the selected parcel.
    Notice the Roads within 1 mile radius of the parcel are highlighted in red.

    The Grey area is the Buffer Zone.
